Newsletter #04 - Between Bushcraft and AI
Beside spending my time in nature crafting planks and wooden nails for hours, I also started to get into AI to be more productive in my job.
Hi,
finally I finished my bushcraft table. Last time I told you about the process of the time consuming plank crafting. So the preparation for this hole project took me a lot of days. For the final assembling of the table I thought I would need 1 day. But even here I was mistaking. It did take 2 days to assemble everything.

Because of all the work I’m really happy and kind of proud of my first Bushcraft table. It’s a huge advantage to the camp. Especially for the lunch brakes. It’s really luxurious to cook and eat at a real table. The table is super stable and looks beautiful as well. Couldn’t be more happy.
To construct it I just used wooden connections with wooden nails. The nails are carved and need to fit perfectly into the drilled holes. If they are too thin the two parts I want to merge don’t hold up tight. If they are too thick there is the danger that the wood splits when hammering in the nail. The precise preparation again took quite some time. It seems like quite everything in Bushcraft woodworking consumes a lot of time.

First I did build the two side structures. They got connected with a big log in the center. On the flattened top it was easy to assemble the planks with more wooden nails. It’s my first project where I don’t use any chords or ropes to make wooden connections. I’m really happy that everything worked out that fine. The table is not perfectly straight, but it’s very stable. So I’m super happy.
If you are interested in details stay tuned at my Instagram Account. On Thursday you will see the whole build in my story.
After building the table I directly started to prepare the next big project. Again I will use wooden nails for connections. But this time I will need about 50 of them. It’s going to be a huge project.

As I mentioned before the nails are carved by knife. This takes a lot of time. So I lately started to carve them at home to speed up the production. Next weekend I will start to prepare the bigger parts of the next build. Stay tuned!
Recently I started to get into all of this AI stuff. In my job as a Web & It project manager it might be not just useful to use AI it might be necessary. With AI it’s possible to be more productive, especially in my job. I guess AI could change our life’s quite a lot. It’s quite interesting to get into that. I just started. A few simple prompts in chatgpt and some tries with mid journey in creating images.

At the beginning it’s quite weird to work with AI, but I’m getting comfortable quite fast. What do you think about AI? Will you integrate using AI into your life or not?
I like it a lot to live my life between those opposites. I work with computers, AI and modern technique and in my free time I spent my time in nature with carving 50 wooden nails. :D

Great Article Olli. I’m in the same position, high tech at work and self sufficient in my home life. Regarding tech at home the old saying “A shoe makers kids don’t have shoes” is true at our home on the river. A little above primitive but everyone is happy and healthy. Mind you I use an iPad to post and take pictures and connect to Substack. But I still consider this a little above primitive in todays IT world. Good luck with your project.
